Objectives and Activities

Charitable purposes

To support the needs of people in Dumfries & Galloway who suffer with Myalgic Encephalomyelitis (ME), Fibromyalgia (FM) & Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (CFS).

Summary of the main activities in relation to these objects

  • Raise awareness of the issues surrounding these illnesses.
  • Offer support to any person suffering with any of these illnesses or any matter concerning them.
  • Facilitate a mutual support network.
  • Enable access to transport, shops, public buildings, education and any other public facility for any person suffering with any of these illnesses.
  • Act as a central point for representative consultation between people with these illnesses and other agencies, including Dumfries & Galloway Council and NHS Dumfries & Galloway.
  • Gather and provide information about all aspects of these illnesses.

Achievements and Performance

Summary of the main achievements of the charity during the financial period:

Name Change:
We changed our name to include ‘fibromyalgia’ to better represent all of the people we support.  Along with the name change we refreshed and updated our constitution and developed a ‘brand’ image with logo and colours to be more recognisable.

Consultation: During the year the NHS sought our views on the Health and Social Care Integration consultations.  The treasurer and chair liaised and group consultations were held too.  Our needs and views were made clear to the NHS.

Meetings: Regular monthly meetings took place, increasing in popularity, with many people coming along for the first time.  Occasional ‘pop-up’get-togethers took place further out with the main town.

Online: The Facebook mutual support page is continuing to be very popular with our members.  It is a very useful tool for disseminating information rapidly.  The page members support one another at all hours of the day or night when moments of frustration hit.  A website has been created giving some basic information on the illnesses and informing of our upcoming meetings.

Offline Communication: Four newsletters were published and posted out to around 260 members.  Some members agreed to receive their newsletters by email to save on our postage costs.

Funds: Our funds at end of year are £3326 and given our outgoings of £1027, which were more than covered by new donations and fundraising, we are in a comfortable position going forward.

Networking / Support: Various health boards, support charities and carers have made contact with the Network to seek advice on behalf of their patients/clients.  These requests and referrals have been increasing, with more doctors becoming aware of us and advising their patients to contact us.  We aren’t in a position to provide one-on-one support but we are able to advise and inform and welcome new people into our meetings and get-togethers.

Financial Review

Brief statement of the charity’s policy on reserves The Network had unrestricted reserves of £3,326 as at 31st July 2016.

This level of reserves should allow the Network to continue its charitable activities for a further 12 months and allow for any fall in income.
