The Network is a charitable unincorporated association and the purpose and administration arrangements are set out in our constitution.

The Network trustees are appointed by the members at our Annual General Meeting.

Objectives and Activities

Charitable purposes

To support the needs of people in Dumfries & Galloway who suffer with Myalgic Encephalomyelitis (ME), Fibromyalgia (FM) & Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (CFS).

Summary of the main activities in relation to these objects

  • Raise awareness of the issues surrounding these illnesses.
  • Offer support to any person suffering with any of these illnesses or any matter concerning them.
  • Facilitate a mutual support network.
  • Enable access to transport, shops, public buildings, education and any other public facility for any person suffering with any of these illnesses.
  • Act as a central point for representative consultation between people with these illnesses and other agencies, including Dumfries & Galloway Council and NHS Dumfries & Galloway.
  • Gather and provide information about all aspects of these illnesses.

Achievements and Performance

Summary of the main achievements of the charity during the financial period:

Membership:

  • 31 new members of Facebook page.  Total 183 at 31st July – increase of 20% since 1st Aug ’16.
  • 25 new full members.  Total 321 at 31st July (excluding Facebook only) – increase of 8.5%.
  • Of the new full members: 4 ME/CFS, 15 Fibro, 3 ME & Fibro, 1 Carer, 2 not stated.

Support to members:

  • Facebook.
  • Website info plus monthly blog and meetings calendar.
  • Newsletter x 3.
  • Monthly meetings including speakers: Tesco Community Champion, FMAUK administrator, and AfME development workers; plus 5 pop-up social meetings – Eastriggs, Kingholm Quay, Dalbeattie and Castle Douglas.
  • Support to individuals in phone calls.
  • Exploring possible future developments / process for applications to funding organisations.
  • Questionnaire to ascertain members’ needs and Network priorities created and dispatched (results due following year).
  • Creation of information leaflets and contact cards.

NHS liaison:

  • Stewarty Locality Manager and Public Health Practitioner – August.
  • Associate Medical Director (Primary Care) – October.
  • Scottish Health Council D&G local officer – November.
  • Health Board Clinical Lead ME – Dec, Feb, May.
  • Wigtownshire Public Health Practitioner at meeting with AfME – July.

Promoting the Network more widely in the region: 

  • Production and distribution of leaflets and business cards – leaflets to libraries, social work and health centres, hospital, GP practices; cards to GPs and pharmacies.
  • Meeting with Practice Manager’s group – April.
  • Awareness Day stand at Tesco – May.

Financial Review

Brief statement of the charity’s policy on reserves The Network had unrestricted reserves of £2,998 as at 31st July 2017.

This level of reserves should allow the Network to continue its charitable activities for a further 12 months and allow for any fall in income.

Details of any deficit

 The deficit of £328 over the year is attributable to the additional activity of production of leaflets and business cards, to promote the Network more widely in the region.
